Today's Story on LOVE: The extent to which we GIVE to a person is the extent to which we feel them giving love to us. If we are not totally giving, we will not be open enough to receive what they are giving back to us. In this recognition is the very quality of receiving. We get to receive the very gift or feeling that we give. How often is one kiss enough? Imagine a five or six year old when you give them a loving kiss. It is only a moment later that they give you one back. Most adults are aware of the principle 'to give is to receive, ' but many will have not practiced it too often. To practice and receive the benefits will allow you to practice the principle more frequently. Whichever way that you choose to operate your life, there will be areas you have never tried and tested. Let me explain with a story. A story about understanding! If you are not willing to understand a new principle, belief or fundamental piece of knowledge, then you will never experience its delights... THE FISH AND THE TURTLE Once upon a time there was a fish. And just because it was a fish, it had lived all its life in the water and knew nothing whatever about anything else but water. And one day as it swam about in the lake where all its days had been spent, it happened to meet a turtle of its acquaintance who had just come back from a little excursion on the land. "Good day, Mr. Turtle!" said the fish. "I have not seen you for a long time. Where have you been?" "Oh", said the turtle, "I have just been for a trip on dry land." "On dry land!" exclaimed the fish. "What do you mean by on dry land? There is no dry land. I had never seen such a thing. Dry land is nothing." "Well, " said the turtle good-naturedly. "If you want to think so, of course you may; there is no one who can hinder you. But that's where I've been, all the same." "Oh, come, " said the fish. "Try to talk sense. Just tell me now what is this land of yours like? Is it all wet?" "No, it is not wet, " said the turtle. "Is it nice and fresh and cool?" asked the fish. "No, it is not nice and fresh and cool, " the turtle replied. "Is it clear so that light can come through it?" "No, it is not clear. Light cannot come through it." "Is it soft and yielding, so that I can move my fins about in it and push my nose through it?" "No, it is not soft and yielding. You could not swim in it." "Does it move or flow in streams?" "No, it neither moves nor flows in streams." "Does it ever rise up into waves then, with white foams in them?" asked the fish, impatient at this string of No's. "No!" replied the turtle, truthfully. "It never rises up into waves that I have seen." "There now, " exclaimed the fish triumphantly. "Didn't I tell you that this land of yours was just nothing? I have just asked, and you have answered me that it is neither wet nor cool, not clear nor soft and that it does not flow in streams nor rise up into waves. And if it isn't a single one of these things what else is it but nothing? Don't tell me." "Well, well", said the turtle, "If you are determined to think that dry land is nothing, I suppose you must just go on thinking so. But any one who knows what is water and what is land would say you were just a silly fish, for you think that anything you have never known is nothing just because you have never known it." And with that the turtle turned away and, leaving the fish behind in its little pond of water, set out on another excursion over the dry land that was nothing. My sister committed suicide and I don't know what to do. Can you please help me?
My sister and I lived together our whole lives. We were both screw-ups who never did anything or got anywhere in life; I'm an alcoholic and she was a drug abuser, we both knew we had problems, but we just didn't care, our lives were already in shambles, so why should we? Well, in October 16 this year, my sister Jane committed suicide, by overdosing in the bathtub, while I was out. She left me a note saying the reason she did it was because she couldn't bear to see what her cute baby brother had become, she couldn't live with the heartbreak anymore so she killed herself, she also said she loved more than anything else in the world and to 'Take care, little brother'. And so here I am, alone in our old country home, sitting in Jane's old office, writing this on her laptop, after spending a month drinking myself into a stupor. I'm tired, I'm alone, I have no friends and my whole family is dead except for my ex-wife and daughter, and they hate me, and with good reason, mind you, after the hell I put them through. I just don't know what to do, right now I'm fighting the urge to go into my sister's medicine cabinet, take a few of her happy pills and wash them down with beer. So, if you're wondering why I came on this website to ask complete strangers what to do, it's because I don't have anyone else to ask, so please, what can I do? PS I need to make one thing clear though: I'm 37 years old, I'm a college dropout, I've never worked a day in my life, and all all these years of drinking have taken a toll on my body and mind. It's too late for me to just start anew, I just want to know where to go from here. I only ask ONE thing of you: don't tell me to go 'looking for God', please, anything but that.

scared of sleeping....?
Ever since I was very young, I have been really afraid of sleeping. I'm now 16, and I'm not showing any signs of getting much better. I go through cycles where, for months at a time, going to bed is no big deal. Then, out of nowhere, my fear comes back and it haunts me even when I'm awake. I find the idea of being asleep so terrifying that I cry before I go to bed. I am fully aware of the fact that nothing will happen to me per se as I sleep, but the thought of willingly losing consciousness for hours at a time bothers me deeply. My parents have heard me complaining about this for years, but they just ignore it. If sleep were simply dreaming, I wouldn't mind it as much as I do. However, I can't fathom how people willingly give up control of their bodies and minds and actually LOOK FORWARD to blacking out. The most frustrating part is that I really do love sleep while I'm in it. When I wake up in the middle of the night, I am so fucking happy when I calculate the number of hours I have left to sleep. When my mom wakes me in the morning, I'm always begging for five more minutes. During my commute to school I always laugh at myself for having made such a big deal the night before, but lo and behold, that night, I'm freaking out again. What should I do? I've seen therapists, but they never seem to help. hawkfligwhatever You are definitely right in that I suffer from anxiety. I have had OCD symptoms since I was in elementary school. It's never been diagnosed, but it is pretty clear and my past therapists and psychologists have agreed.

What counts for 5-a-day fruit and veg?
Hi, I;ve come to the realisation that in order to recover from depression I need to look at my diet...I eat absolute rubbish. My BMI is 20.1 so thats fine, but my body and mind can't recover without the right nutrients. So I've decided to start phasing IN the fruit and veg and once I am used to that start phasing OUT junk food. However I'm having trouble with what counts in 5 a day. Can you help? Today I've had (fruit and veg wise): - Apple pie - Butterbeans and butternut squash in a tomatoey sauce with new potatoes - A deep soup bowl of salad: mixed leafy green leaves (eg rocket, spinach), about 8cm of chopped cucumber and 2 salad tomatoes - A glass of cloudy apple juice - 100g of Fruit shortcake biscuits (11% currants) What of this counts? What other changes would you suggest? Thankyou! Thanks for replies! How many portions do you think i have had today then? I have kiwi fruit and bananas and cereal with mixed berries ready to add tomorrow but I don't like to eat too close to bedtime! Thanks, I had no idea apple juice was bad! I have a lot to learn..
