British Attitude
Today's Story on LOVE: Love is an intense feeling of deep affection. Love can also mean an intense sexual attraction to someone. If we forget the personal feeling for a moment, how would we describe someone who shows love to the world? Perhaps a good example would be that you offer the same affection to everyone, whether a neighbour or an enemy. If you met a stranger, then you would offer the same help regardless. Of course this feeling of offering love to the world is one that many would think they readily apply each day. Like many moments of sadness a spiralling effect is created. If you are hurting, or you are suffering regular bouts of pain, your temperament is more unstable than normal; and your ability to offer love diminishes. Alternatively if you experience a few moments of selfishness, your greed to serve than mood increases and the chance of you offering any love also diminishes. Not me! Cries the reader... Unless you are very saintly, selfishness is difficult to shrug off. In some small way, each day, there is evidence of a selfish action. Forgive me for suggesting it can be eliminated, but selfishness can be weakened. To see it and understand it is half the battle. Have you ever been in a similar situation to this merchant in the next story? A HASIDIC STORY A wealthy Jewish merchant treats a poor old man with rudeness and disdain as they travel together on a train. When they arrive at their common destination, the merchant finds the station thronged with pious Jews waiting in ecstatic joy to greet the arrival of one of the holiest rabbis in Europe, and learns to his frustration that the old man in his compartment is that saintly rabbi. Embarrassed at his disgraceful behaviour and distraught that he missed a golden opportunity to speak in privacy to a wise and holy man, the merchant pushes his way through the crowd to find the old man. When he reaches him, he begs the rabbi's forgiveness and requests his blessing. The old rabbi looks at him and replies, "I cannot forgive you. To receive forgiveness you must go out and beg it from every poor old person in the world." (by: Brian Cavanaugh, T.O.R., The Sower's Seeds). QUOTE: 'Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; begin it well and serenely and with too high a spirit to be cumbered with your old nonsense.' (Ralph Waldo Emerson).

Grey areas of sex...has the Welshman made the subject he raises a mature one...?
The Chief constable of Dyfed-Powys (Wales, UK) tells us the grey area of sex and age (thirteen to sixteen) should be made clearer, so if Horny Harry (17) gives Full Bodied Farrah (14) his full attention, would he indeed be judged as a paedophile - of course, this could happen the other way - a rip 'n' roar lass at 18 removing 13 year olds' Jerry's cherry. It will be argued that law is law - but despite the intense British attitude about sex (of all ages, it must be said) how on earth can we scream at a 17 year old boy who has had sex with someone who he has known for years - but is only 15? The Chief Constable's words are, as he added, personal...but could he have woken up the self-righteous dears who are eager to judge boys...who might (or might not) look older than the wee lass he's developing his sex skills with?
Oh dear...the question seems to have ended up in a different room - the Lesbian/Gay one...must have pressed the wrong button (in a manner of speaking). Mea culpa!
Know what you mean, Gerry...from rainbow one decade to smog the next!
That's true, Jack C - may be giving examples...but in the late sixties/early seventies when I reached the 'developing' age, can't remember girls on street corners wearing tease-tops, from the age of 12 onward, like 'Kiss me today, **** me tomorrow' (my stars, not Yahoo's) - and I'm sure you've seen likewise 'sexy' messages. Once upon a time, this was not much of a grey area as we didn't have the media sexing-up of everything from cars to cat food. The law indeed says sixteen is the age, but we're not talking about 41 year old males with 14 year olds. It seems nowadays, the new 'cool' with the young (girls especially) is to wear the most surreally termed message in order to keep in with her friends. You have stepped onto the populist tabloid step, with your 17 year old boy - and six year old girl scene. The Chief Constable - and many others are more concerned about the ages thirteen to nineteen - if a teenage boy gets it on with a 6 year old, punishment is the only option.
Nioce one, Xialou...I remember many male friends at school bragging that they lost their cherries at the most weirdest ages - it would have been amusing to have the police visit the school, and ask who was doing what to whom...who would be so eager to brag then?
Sorry, Jack C...it was David P who was being the Sun reading intellectual!
Sorry, Jack C...it was David P who was being the Sun reading intellectual!
Nice one, Lizzy...but have also discovered when the situation gets a wee bit too much for the 14/20 year old lass, she becomes the innocent rose again while her parents and the police are furiously looking for the 'nasty nonce', who despite honestly not knowing her age, will provide 'exclusives' for the tabloids for weeks to come, who will presume he's as guilty as sin.

Can u help me understand? I've a round-about question re: British attitudes to punishing terrorists?
When I tell people (when asked) how we combat terrorism - [which never reach Western media & Indonesian media cares less]- people seem very horrified or shocked that we in Indo' can do these things.
(terrorist propaganda website will show selective footage ie www.aceh-online.com)
But to us they have hurt us & are attempting violent overthrow of the State- so we the security forces are fully justified in using whatever methods to eliminate them. Our public generally supports us (usually very poor simple villagers, farmers & workers are hurt most by terrorism).
Yes all very well to be polite and place them in jail- but what of justice for the victim and the dead?
We would not think to leave them in jail aside from awaiting their bullet and our jails are notorious for being as you call "hell-holes".
Your views on punishment I do not get?
Why do many Westerners attempt excusing/explaining the terrorist? He's a freedom fighter?
I dont understand this misplaced sympathy for perpetrator?
James- you will explain this ridiculous and weak position to my nations victims perhaps?
James- you may patronizingly label us uncivilized- but I hear more of your public advocating our use of a bullet or better yet a cane or machete for such animals you consider equal human beings than your bourgeoisie values.

York Council banning November 5th?
York Council and the never ending red tape of Health & Safety has banned a bonfire in the local football ground because they can't ensure peoples safety and fireworks might fall on them? Is this just the start of the Anti-British attitude from our own councils and government? I've even heard that because of "sudden" insurance costs and a whole load more H&S rules, not many Christmas lights are going up across roads. I think it's time to get Labour and H&S out.
