Virginia?s Ultrasound Law
22 Feb 2012 at 4:43pm
The Virginia state legislature is on track to pass a law requiring women to have a transvaginal ultrasound before being permitted to have an abortion. As might be imagined, there is considerable opposition to this law. Some critics have  even argued that forcing women ?
Church & State II: Discrimination
20 Feb 2012 at 6:48pm
In the United States, the American?s with Disabilities Act makes it illegal to discriminate against people based on their disabilities. Unless, apparently, the institution doing the discrimination is a church. A disabled woman who was teaching at a religious school ?
Religious freedom and religious privilege

I enjoyed reading Mike LaBossiere?s post entitled ?Church & State: Immaculate Contraception?, but I can?t resist the impulse to add a post of my own ? perhaps because I lack free will in the matter, but mainly because I devote ?
Church & State: Immaculate Contraception

Back in 1914 Margaret Sanger included information about birth control in the June issue of her magazine, The Woman Rebel. She was arrested under the Comstock Law and her ally, the anarchist Emma Goldman, was soon after arrested for the same crime. ?
Mediums & Muses

As I do every spring, I am teaching  my Aesthetics class. As might be expected, one of the subjects I address is the nature of artistic creativity and the creation of the arts. Putting things rather simply (perhaps too simply) one ?
Soon-to-Haves

I am working on a book on rhetoric and, as might be imagined, this year?s American political season has been a goldmine. Recently Mitch Daniels said ?We do not accept that ours will ever be a nation of ?
Is Education a Public Good?
8 Feb 2012 at 6:29pm
While higher education is generally regarded as a good (mainly because folks with college degrees make more than folks who lack such degrees), there has been considerable debate in the United States as to whether or not higher education is ?
Towers of Ivory, Towers of Gold
6 Feb 2012 at 5:19pm
Academics in general and philosophers in particular are often accused of dwelling in ivory towers that lift them out of the ?real world? (which is, presumably, everything outside of academics). Being a philosophy professor, I do have some sympathy to ?
The Atheist?s Guide to Reality: An Interview with Alex Rosenberg
6 Feb 2012 at 5:50am
Reality, notes philosopher Alex Rosenberg, is ?completely different from what most people think? stranger than even many atheists recognize.?   And having spent some 40 years trying to work out ?exactly how advances in biology, neuroscience and evolutionary anthropology, fit together ?
Corruption, Gravity & Litter
3 Feb 2012 at 5:08pm
The Daily Show recently featured an interesting interview with Yale Law School professor Jonathan Macey. One part of the interview that I found especially interesting was Macey?s ?defense? of capital firms like Bain in terms of what seemed to be the necessity ?

Regarding the TV show "The Mentalist"?
I'll try to be as clear as I can here, so you know what I DO mean, and what I DON'T! I have two main questions, the 2nd of which is perhaps more suited to people here, but please have a go at both. First, is the character of Patrick Jane in "The Mentalist" in ANY WAY based on a real person, or persons? I'm not suggesting an actual "crime-fighter", just a skilled mentalist or similar expert in human behaviour & psychology, based on the definition of "mentalist" given in Wikipedia, which is briefly someone who uses psychology, hypnosis, cold-reading and other such techniques to "read" minds and predict or manipulate people's thoughts and behaviour? The closest I can think of to someone who has such skills is Derren Brown, who is definitely NOT a crime fighter (not so far as I know, anyway). For example, Sherlock Holmes was based in part on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's teacher of Medicine at Edinburgh Uni, Dr. Joseph Bell, who was not a crime-fighter, but a doctor whose skills in observation and deduction were so incredible that he could find out all manner of details about a patient simply by looking at them and their possessions. House MD is based on a serious of articles about amazing medical cases published by a woman ( a doctor?) in a US newspaper, although the actual character himself is - I believe - purely a fictional construct, designed to make the show different from & more entertaining than the "procedural" dramas being churned out by US TV. If there is/are such a person/persons, is/are he or she/they a psychotherapist(s)? Second, a bit more of a stretch, do you know of any UK psychotherapists who have such good, wide-ranging, and more general people-reading skills, insights, and rapport like Derren Brown or the fictional "Patrick Jane", as opposed to just training & qualifications in psychotherapy? I used to feel the American TV psychologist Dr. Phil McGraw (whom I'm afraid I no longer respect) had great abilities in seeing through to who people are and what their problems were, empathizing, and helping them find how to overcome their problems, as opposed to just trained & qualified automatons who just mechanically apply their theories & training to people, with varied success. I believe NLP came about through Grinder & Bandler studying 3 such gifted psychotherapists, who albeit came from very different disciplines.

Will you allow yourself to be hypnotised at a protest?
Occupy Wall Street protesters are undergoing collectivist zombie training in Atlanta, where a large group was caught on film engaging in a weird sort of "one voice" hypnotic chanting ritual that characterises the key principles of both Communism and Socialism. Having studied linguistics and human psychology over many years, I recognise mass hypnosis when I see it. The mind-numbing call-and-return vocalisations captured in this video reflect the same kind of mind control techniques used in cults, sporting events and even some church revival events. The whole point of this experience is to eliminate the individual mind and train everyone to think, and say, and do exactly what they are told to do by a "leaderless leader" who is really a mind control manipulator. A hypnotist. Just take a look at this folks: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3QZlp3eGMNI&feature=player_embedded#! All thoughts welcome. @ Ash. I don't know about you, but I actually have many years Military service behind me. Look at what I said when I said: "The whole point of this experience is to eliminate the individual mind and train everyone to think, and say, and do exactly what they are told". So yes,..the Military does have a use for such techniques too, you are right. Very observant of you.

Is my mental illness a product of criminal hypnosis?
I am forced into a psychotic state nearly every day. I've heard about hypnosis but never really believed. After watching a tv show I realized the subject of hypnotism has similar experiences; complete memory blackouts, doing things we would never choose to do, completely irrational beliefs and so on. I can't seem to find my triggers, the times i think it is most obvious is when i am made so angry i cannot help but show it, also i have times when i am just a giggling mess (there doesn't seem to be a real world reason for either) Do you think perhaps i should find a hypnotherapist, obviously i am reluctant to believe the cure for this man made disease the same as the cause. Please advise, my entire life has been a living hell, and this is the strongest lead i've had in quite some time.
