Early Greek historical info please?
Does anyone know of any published works on the emergence of the Greek nation and particularly the development of their religion and their pantheon and how it related to their social structure.
I am particularly seeking a possible explanation as to why certain gods/goddesses were given certain attributes and how this related to the social cuture - specifically why Artemis was seen as a huntress with a bow. Understandable that her brother Apollo might have one but why a woman ? Did women in ancient greece go hunting for example ? or was there some other reason.(other than the "Bow" of the crescent moon)
I have the Golden Bough on my bookshelf. This research is in a rather specific area and is for a book I am writing. It might not be found in books which are wide ranging, but more likely in a paper, monograph or disssertation. How one finds such things is difficult.
What luthaneal says confirms many of my thoughts, but the suggested origins of Artemis are new to me and I would like to explore this further. As an archery historian I cannot say that I have come across anything which would prove the use of the bow by women in Paleolithic times - this does not preclude this however, there is just no evidence I know of.
If there is I would dearly love to learn about it.

ramadan, where this word ALLAH come from?
Not true. Allah is just the name of one of a pantheon of spirits worshipped at the time of Mohammed.
It just happened to be the name of the local deity his family group worshipped. Mohammed successfully
used religion as a tool of political domination so that name became the name of the one god they promoted.
Islam is basically a creed using a made-up religion for the purposes of political domination, therefore Muslims
oppose & would wipe out all people of any other faith. However, apart from their warlike faith,

Christians-a few genuine questions from an Atheist.?
Ok so this isn't going to be the standard rant about religion and all that, I just have a few questions I'd like honest opinions on. Also, fellow atheists are welcome to contribute, but don't give stupid answers.
so firstly I was curious. If you believe in one true God, then how can you explain the presence of other religions. Especially when some a radically different, for instance Hinduism, where there is a whole pantheon of different Gods. It's not a question of which is right or wrong, I'm just curious to see what you think.
Secondly, What are your views on Evolution? Especially when you consider discoveries in the fossil record which seem to point towards it being more fact than theory-Also, the dinosaurs. Do you believe they existed or what? I'm aware that some Christians believe in evolution, if this applies to you, how do you explain it?
Also, the God described in the Old Testament is quite different at times to the God in the New Testament. Why do you think this is? is it just text influenced by context?
Finally, and you'll hate for me for this, but I want to know your opinions. If you believe God to be omnipotent and benevolent, how can you explain the suffering that he lets mankind go through? I know this question is rolled out a lot, but it's because it's a important one. Don't use the theory that he is in some way testing us or allowing us to make our own mistakes, because that for me seems like a convenient way out.
cheers for your views. If you've been constructive that is. Don't just throw Biblical references at me.
