Dear Graduates: Push the Boundaries
25 May 2012 at 9:37am As the class of 2012 heads into the real world, here's a reminder: Never be satisfied with the status quo. This time of year is full of commencement ceremonies across the country. In honor of this year's crop of graduates, the class of 2012, I've been thinking about one pithy lesson that I might convey to them as they enter the adult world. My inspiration comes from a book I read recently called ...Read more...

24 May 2012 at 12:01pm Redd Griffin has been many things in his 73 years. A teacher, soldier, legislator, news reporter, patriot. But mostly he considers himself a student. The bliss of reading
20 May 2012 at 12:30pm India, May 21 -- I believe, as many of you do, that reading old books is like meeting old friends. And if you read an old classic after ages, you have the feeling that you are at home with a long-lost friend. It was last week that I had my tryst with some of such 'old friends'. The Story of Philosophy by Will Durant, Sceptical Essays by Bertrand Russell, The Discovery of India and An ...Read more...

What was Freud's view of Eastern Philosophies such as Buddhism and Taoism? (Answers: 2) (Comments: 0)
I've been studying Buddhism, Taoism and Zen for a while now, they've helped me a great deal in my life with their brilliant understanding of the mind. But now I've started my A-levels and one of my A-levels is Psychology. I'm about half way through the year and it's made me realize (for some reason annoyed me) just how similar what some of the theories are to that of the theories presented by Eastern philosophy made known to me through people such as Alan Watts, Ajahn Chah and Ajahn Brahm.
And now I've come across Freud and his concept of the "ego" and explanations for abnormality are almost identical to some of the ideas I've heard from Eastern philosophy. Similarly in sociology the other social science I do many of the theories have already been said by Gautama Buddha or Lao Tzu etc. Why is it that my text books only credit white westerners in suits as the sole founders of Psychology? This has all confused me to some degree and so I was interested what Freud's view of eastern philosophy was. (if he knew of it)
Yeah I read that on his wiki page, but there was no mention of any Eastern Philosophies on there which has left me mythed. :S I found this though - http://www.freud.org.uk/education/topic/40037/subtopic/40051/ It claims that Freud collected many Buddhist and Taoist artifacts.

Or is it caught up in religious and scientific theories, beliefs, faiths and viewpoints?
True intelligence is of the body.
Life is about *making* sense, as Alan Watts said, "We have to go out of our minds to come to our senses."
James: You know what the question is about. : )

is there anyone here interested in taoism?Anyone against it? (Answers: 7) (Comments: 0)
what are your thoughts about taoism?
It seems a spiritual/philosophical 'fit' for me. A vicar friend gave me a copy of Alan watts - 'The taboo against knowing who you really are' and it had a big effect on me. I read in wiki that he was at a stage of merging hinduism taoism and buddhism. Any thoughts or good websites appreciated.
