column riddle?
Once more we offer a humble riddle.
Do not let it defeat you.
Are you insightful enough to find,
what may be famous or just in your mind.
I may be recounted for centuries to come,
or I may undue what has already been done.
I have often changed many a fate,
I can be swift, I can make you wait.
My people pronounce on justice and history,
Sun Tzu?s guide may reduce my military mystery.
I may escape the firmest grip,
And my namesake is a first rate ship.
A silent gesture of the hand,
or loudly celebrated across a land?
In remembrance I?m an arch or column,
yet I was disappointing at Asculum!
A full solution will be posted.
To be assured of a BA your reasoning should be explained.
Arggg!
Yes victory.
Alas, once more I?m defeated. The war continues.
Host consciousness:
Thanks Ruserious very fast response and (almost) totally correct. Following your excellent answer just a few points to tidy up:
"what may be famous or just in your mind."
Refers to personal as well as public victories.
"My people pronounce on justice and history,"
Alludes to victors justice (or injustice), and the observation that traditionally it is the victor who records the history of a given event.
"And my namesake is a first rate ship."
A "first-rate" ship is a specific term, not just a loose compliment. HMS Victory is the most famous first-rate ship (and I think the only one still in existence?)
"yet I was disappointing at Asculum!" - RM got this.
The site of a famous battle. From this event the term pyrrhic victory is derived. Being a victory at too high a cost. Therefore disappointing.
Overall I think this riddle is perhaps too long, and the rhyme is fairly painful - especially the last two lines!
Hard luck RM - I think you would have got it.
