Stephen Fry: Philosophy is an odd thing. When we use the word in everyday speech you know you sometimes hear it hilariously. They say, Oh, its never good to be late. Thats my philosophy. You think thats a generous description of that rather dull precept to call it a philosophy, but its odd how philosophers generally speaking, at least the ones Ive read or the ones I you know value, dont have in that sense a philosophy. There is no particular Socratic or Nietzschean or Kantian way to live your life. They dont offer ethical codes and standards by which to live your life. They dont offer a philosophy to follow. They just simply raise an enormous number of questions mostly, so in the sense that you put the question is there a philosopher thats important to me. Well I me I loved really the sort of the Bertrand Russell grand sort of tour of philosophy, the history of philosophy from the pre Socratics as they're called, Zeno and so on through to Socrates and Plato and Aristotle. I never quite liked Aristotle. I think thats partly... Although he was obviously a genius and brilliant and he invented logic, so whats not to like. I think it was his influence on the medieval mind was probably rather pernicious ... From: FFreeThinker2 Views: 176719 1544 ratings Time: 03:45 More in Education Does Philosophy Still Matter? | The New School by thenewschoolnyc 1 Feb 2011 at 8:21am Does Philosophy Still Matter? | The New School THE NEW SCHOOL | www.newschool.edu A distinguished panel addresses this question on the occasion of the publication of Professor James Miller's new book, Examined Lives From Socrates to Nietzsche. At the end of the day, even if you put aside the whole 'Islam is violent and evil' thing, isn't it still just?
another stupid Abrahamic religion with nothing to back it up ?
sup man, hadith like the one where eating 7 ajwa dates in the morning will protect you from poison (and magic!) or, alternately, EVERYTHING until the evening ? And hadith like the one that says that fly wings can cure all known contagious diseases just by dipping them into your drink ? (so, have AIDS ? Just take a blood sample, dip a fly into it, dip the fly in some hot cocoa and drink it. Presto, no more AIDS. ). Hadith like those ?
Isa ibn, the Earth was sewn to Heaven ? With thread ? And I suppose the sun sets in muddy spring ? Oh, wait, I know, it's 'metaphor' where it's obviously false and 'scientific miracle' where you can bend it enough to fit a new discovery. Whatever.
More for Isa Ibn:
18:84 Lo! We made him strong in the land and gave him unto every thing a road.
18:85 And he followed a road
18:86 Till, when he reached the setting-place of the sun, he found it setting in a muddy spring, and found a people thereabout. We said: O Dhu'l-Qarneyn! Either punish or show them kindness.
**********
21:32 And we have made the sky a roof withheld (from them). Yet they turn away from its portents.
21:33 And He it is Who created the night and the day, and the sun and the moon. They float, each in an orbit.
*********
41:12 Then He ordained them seven heavens in two Days and inspired in each heaven its mandate; and We decked the nether heaven with lamps, and rendered it inviolable. That is the measuring of the Mighty, the Knower.
*********
67:5 And verily We have beautified the world's heaven with lamps, and We have made them missiles for the devils, and for them We have prepared the doom of flame.
*********
86:5 So let man consider from what he is created.

What colour best represents my views on morality?
I forgot about one subject: morality.
My views on morality:
? Religion should not have a role in shaping human morality, for it will only lead to a black and white morality. For example, the Abrahamic religions have a very negative view on pagan religions, psychics, occultists, fortune tellers and people of spiritual beliefs that are different from the Abrahamic beliefs, and they encourage people not to have anything to do with those groups. But what exactly is wrong with those groups of people? This is an example of propaganda against another religion being part of a religion?s morality, which is very dangerous.
? Government and law should not affect human morality, because if it does we would have a legalised morality, which is very bad because it is imposed.
? Morality should never be politicised.
? The backbone of society should not be a false dichotomy, which is a fallacy.
? Good versus evil is a false dichotomy which should not be used to describe affairs.
? Discipline is wrong and once instilled into a child it destroys the child?s freedom, confidence and sense of personal power.
? Institutionalised discipline and morality is always wrong. Take military schools for instance. Subjecting children to such extreme discipline ant their age is everything close to modern barbarism towards children.
? Moral absolutism is equal to tyranny and fascism.
? Morality is not black and white; sometimes you need to do bad things for the sake doing something good. Morality is so complex it must be in subtle shades.
? Science should have an influence on morality so that morality can attain progress. Morality should be allowed to evolve as society changes.
? There should be no universal, fixed, all-encompassing system of morality imposed on society. Morality is supposed to be in the eye of the beholder and an individual?s morality should be dependent on himself/herself.
What colour best represents these views? An animal or object to go with it is optional.

Sikh or Muslim? Which would you be if you HAD TO?
Imagine you had to be one or the other, no in betweens, no neithers.
Muslim:
Pray 5 times a day,
Be circumcised,
Eat halal meat,
Women wear head-scarfs and burqas
Consider Islam as only true faith. Reject others, especially non-Abrahamic religions.
Sikh:
Never cut your hair,
Wear a turban,
Refuse to eat halal meat.
Embrace other religions.
Tolerant of homosexuals.
@Muhammand,
Sikhs don't single out halal meat. That's my fault in the question. Sikhs dislike inhumane preparation of meat. This includes halal meat.
But Sikhs do have history with Muslims. Back in the 1500s/1600s when the Sikh people wanted to break free from the Muslims, the Muslims oppressed them and engaged in violent attack towards the Sikh people.
@timelady,
yes, of course.
