Stephen Fry: Philosophy is an odd thing. When we use the word in everyday speech you know you sometimes hear it hilariously. They say, Oh, its never good to be late. Thats my philosophy. You think thats a generous description of that rather dull precept to call it a philosophy, but its odd how philosophers generally speaking, at least the ones Ive read or the ones I you know value, dont have in that sense a philosophy. There is no particular Socratic or Nietzschean or Kantian way to live your life. They dont offer ethical codes and standards by which to live your life. They dont offer a philosophy to follow. They just simply raise an enormous number of questions mostly, so in the sense that you put the question is there a philosopher thats important to me. Well I me I loved really the sort of the Bertrand Russell grand sort of tour of philosophy, the history of philosophy from the pre Socratics as they're called, Zeno and so on through to Socrates and Plato and Aristotle. I never quite liked Aristotle. I think thats partly... Although he was obviously a genius and brilliant and he invented logic, so whats not to like. I think it was his influence on the medieval mind was probably rather pernicious ... From: FFreeThinker2 Views: 176887 1544 ratings Time: 03:45 More in Education Does Philosophy Still Matter? | The New School by thenewschoolnyc 1 Feb 2011 at 8:21am Does Philosophy Still Matter? | The New School THE NEW SCHOOL | www.newschool.edu A distinguished panel addresses this question on the occasion of the publication of Professor James Miller's new book, Examined Lives From Socrates to Nietzsche. Why do people blame Islam for terrorism?
Terrorism, atrocities and genocide have nothing to do with religion at all. Islam is included in the list of religions that specifically denounce the killing of others.
The word 'Islam' means 'surrender', although its root is the same as 'shalom' in Hebrew, which means 'peace'.
Jihad has been wrongly portrayed. It means 'struggle', not war. Jihad can only be declared in defence of Allah. There is no defence in terrorism.
In terms of their attitudes to women, the Qu'ran only mentions the hijab in relation to Muhammed's wives, therefore there is no connection between the religion and women being forced to wear this. Also, Muhammed caused outrage in his day by GIVING more rights to women, not taking them.
Though the Qu'ran is near impossible for a Westerner to fully understand, many of us tend to draw our own conclusions about what we think it says. Like the Bible, translation could never bring about the correct message.

Fair enough. I guess politics is a religious subject, then.
When the Spaniards, Brits and French committed genocide shortly after colonising the 'New World'.... I guess we could call that a honourable act in true loving Christian fashion?
hmmmm.... let's not also forget..... oh wait, I forgot. I think it had something to do with human roasts, though.
Hold that thought!!! We're ALL guilty!!!

Ideas as to qualities to include in a religious "peer assessment"?
Somebody asked about "best organised religion", and it got me thinking. It might be be interesting to do a sort of peer assessment of different religions.
When I was at Uni some parts of our course were marked by peer assessment. Idea was people were asked to fill out a questionnaire. Each row covered a different quality (marked out of 10, 10 being best) and each column covered a different person INCLUDING themselves. (Hopefully processing eliminated prejudice/cheating!)
See no reason why it couldn't be done for different religions/spiritualities, instead of people. Just need a (small) list of qualities, and a (small) list of religions for people to mark those qualities on.
attempting to avoid deliberate skewing in favour of one group is the whole reason for peer assessment! If you mark high, then your votes count for less, mark low then your votes count for more. It's related to this
