Today's Story on THE LOVE OF WISDOM: If it is true that actions speak louder than words, how often do you say to someone you love them? What can speak louder than that? If I ever was to make a defence in court, in defence of the power of words as opposed to action, I would use today's story to illustrate the power of saying, 'I love you.' Days can fly by, weeks, months and years can also pass quickly. We must not forget to say to those important to you that you LOVE them. As we know this appreciating those close to you is important, we must recognise in ourselves, especially men, the impulse when a loving thought occurs. Women have an inbuilt mechanism that recognises this easier than men; but this impulse must be acted upon with words. If you are sat at the breakfast table and your child begins to clear the table of the plates and cups, you must show your appreciation. Make recognising this impulse become part of your personal philosophy, it will help to improve your attitude. WHO I AM MAKES A DIFFERENCE A teacher decided to honour each of her seniors in high school by telling them the difference they each made. She called each student to the front of the class, one at a time. First she told each of them how they had made a difference to her and the class. Then she presented each of them with a blue ribbon imprinted with gold letters, which read, "Who I Am Makes a Difference." Afterwards the teacher decided to do a class project to see what kind of impact recognition would have on a community. She gave each of the students three more ribbons and instructed them to go out and spread this acknowledgment ceremony. Then they were to follow up on the results, see who honoured whom and report back to the class in about a week. One of the boys in the class went to a junior executive in a nearby company and honoured him for helping him with his career planning. He gave him a blue ribbon and put it on his shirt. Then he gave him two extra ribbons and said, "We're doing a class project on recognition, and we'd like you to go out, find somebody to honour, give them a blue ribbon, then give them the extra blue ribbon so they can acknowledge a third person to keep this acknowledgment ceremony going. Then please report back to me and tell me what happened." Later that day the junior executive went in to see his boss, who had been noted, by the way, as being kind of a grouchy fellow. He sat his boss down and he told him that he deeply admired him for being a creative genius. The boss seemed very surprised. The junior executive asked him if he would accept the gift of the blue ribbon and would he give him permission to put it on him. His surprised boss said, "Well, sure." The junior executive took the blue ribbon and placed it right on his boss's jacket above his heart. As he gave him the last extra ribbon, he asked, "Would you do me a favour? Would you take this extra ribbon and pass it on by honouring somebody else? The young boy who first gave me the ribbons is doing a project in school and we want to keep this recognition ceremony going and find out how it affects people." That night the boss came home to his 14-year-old son and sat him down. He said, "The most incredible thing happened to me today. I was in my office and one of the junior executives came in and told me he admired me and gave me a blue ribbon for being a creative genius. Imagine. He thinks I'm a creative genius. Then he put this blue ribbon that says "Who I Am Makes a Difference, " on my jacket above my heart. He gave me an extra ribbon and asked me to find somebody else to honour. As I was driving home tonight, I started thinking about whom I would honour with this ribbon and I thought about you. I want to honour you. My days are really hectic and when I come home I don't pay a lot of attention to you. Sometimes I scream at you for not getting good enough grades in school and for your bedroom being a mess, but somehow tonight, I just wanted to sit here and, well, just let you know that you do make a difference to me. Besides your mother, you are the most important person in my life. You're a great kid and I love you!" The startled boy started to sob and sob, and he couldn't stop crying. His whole body shook. He looked up at his father and said through his tears, "Dad, earlier tonight I sat in my room and wrote a letter to you and Mom explaining why I had killed myself and asking you to forgive me. I was going to commit suicide tonight after you were asleep. I just didn't think that you cared at all. The letter is upstairs. I don't think I need it after all." His father walked upstairs and found a heartfelt letter full of anguish and pain. The envelope was addressed, "Mom and Dad." The boss went back to work a changed man. He was no longer a grouch, but made sure to let all his employees know that they made a difference. The junior executive helped several other young people with career planning and never forgot to let them know that they made a difference in his life... one being the boss's son. And the young boy and his classmates learned a valuable lesson. WHO YOU ARE DOES MAKE DIFFERENCE. (Author Unknown) QUOTE: "Our attitudes control our lives. Attitudes are a secret power working twenty four hours a day, for good or bad. It is of paramount importance that we know how to harness and control this great force.' (Tom Blandi)

50,000 Scientists Change Their Minds On Climate Change, Why?
In 2003 the American Geophysical Union (AGU), the world's largest society of Earth scientists representing 50,000 members, called for further study to understand climate change.
On 24/01/08 the AGU issued a follow-up statement stating its conclusions.
The AGU says it now believes that recent changes in climate are attributable to human activity, that the changes to Earth?s climate system were "best explained by the increased atmospheric abundances of GHG?s generated by human activities in the 20th Century".
?The organization, also states that the world would need to cut emissions of greenhouse gases by more than 50 percent to avoid warming the planet by 2 degrees Celsius, a level at which substantial disruptions would take place.?

The point as I see it is that this AGU statement is much stronger than any it?s made in the past. They did what many have called for - further research and study - this is their conclusion.
Wormwar1. You could also say that scientists study ice ages (rather than a biblical flood) because it?s easier to get grants. But it?s also because a majority of people agree with the evidence for ice-ages and for the earth being over 6,000 years old and that ice-ages, not a single 40 day flood, offers a more convincing explanation for how features such as mountain valleys were formed. In other words, they believe the science they are studying is correct.
To add that the AGU represents 20,000 working climate scientists.

Is there a scientific consensus on global warming?
Yes there is - this site lists the many different organisations, associations +notable individuals supporting the existence of man made climate change and the need to take action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

why is the U.S. coal industry getting $2.8 billion after a year of record profits?
isnt that twice the value of the gov. investment in the 'future gen' carbon capture clean coal prototype that the Bush admin. recently pulled out of?
http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?id=clean-coal-power-plant-canceled-hydrogen-economy-too
"After a year of record profits, coal operatives will receive nearly $2.8 billion in tax credits in the recent Wall Street bailout.
And last Friday, with all of the banter about "clean coal" drowning out the critics, the Bush administration quietly moved to alter one of the last remaining laws protecting against the wholesale clear-cutting and horrific strip mining practice called mountaintop removal in Appalachia. This is the process of blowing the tops off mountains and dumping the remains into the waterways or valleys -- over 1,600 miles of streams and 470 mountains in central Appalachia have been erased from American maps."
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jeff-biggers/speak-now-against-bushs-g_b_136036.html
it was evident in that recent vice.p. debate that even the democrat guy didnt actually know what 'clean coal' he was talking about. the only truly 'clean' coal is carbon capture, and as dana says, its still a decade of full commercial implmentation, and apart from the old oil wells we havnt actually got that many places to put the co2 safely.
zuccini, the mountaintop removal strip mining is truly appalling. heres the first picture i came across;

less 'clean' you could not get, however you spin it.

have the climate change deniers learned the creationists tactics?
or are they indeed mainly the same people?
as "Delay is no longer an option. Denial is no longer an acceptable response" (thank you Mr. Obama), we will be seeing more in the way of these creationist style sneaky attacks;
'contrived dualism' - repeating over and over that there is controversy over the theory when there isn't, until some people start believing it.
'its a theory not a fact' , taking advantage of the common confusion between the scientific use of the word and the everyday one.
'academic freedom' - claiming that valid alternative interpretations are being suppressed, when they are not, as there aren't any, taking advantage of our natural desire to see fair play.
can you think of more? and have you any suggestions for countering these tactics?
oh, one that is slightly more adapted is
that teaching evolution threatens religion, morality and society;
which turns into
'even if its happening we cant afford to fix it/fixing it will leave developing countries in poverty' as if that wasnt already happening...

oops! yes dana, i should have said 'intelligent design' (snigger).
of course, as you point out, there is a whole other, money driven side to it.
town clown, i dont understand them. if they gave up their silly dogma that the story in the book is more than a nice allegory, they could claim the big bang and all the wonders of time and space and beyond for their god....
yank, you can edit yr speling miztakes all u want, but you cant make the telegraph a reputable source lol!
you are right of course about the levels of uncertainty martin. but i'm pointing out the similarity in tactics, which i think is a valid point.
