Sermon
Today's Story on THE LOVE OF WISDOM: Frequently things happen in our life that we have little control over, yet we must learn to adapt to change. There is little that is anything more certain than change. It will happen every day. In our love of wisdom it would seem appropriate to grasp certain eventualities, come to terms with them and be prepared for their effect. Sometimes we are dealt with a bad hand and expected to come out on top. We need to practice being positive and turning an initial negative situation into something more optimistic. Today's story has a little of this thread of positive ness amongst its plot, but the miracle we witness from the effort is not financial but the emotion of needing to help; when those more fortunate see a NEED, and see an individual trying to overcome a battle, generosity will often spill from their soul. SIX HUNGRY BABIES In September 1960 I woke up one morning with six hungry babies and just 75 cents in my pocket. Their father was gone. The boys ranged from three months to seven years; their sister was two. Their Dad had never been much more than a presence they feared. Whenever they heard his tires crunch on the gravel driveway they would scramble to hide under their beds. He did manage to leave $15 a week to buy groceries. Now that he had decided to leave, there would be no more beatings, but no food either. If there was a welfare system in effect in southern Indiana at that time, I certainly knew nothing about it. I scrubbed the kids until they looked brand new and then put on my best homemade dress. I loaded them into the rusty old 51 Chevy and drove off to find a job. The seven of us went to every factory, store, and restaurant in our small town. No luck. The kids stayed crammed into the car and tried to be quiet while I tried to convince whoever would listen that I was willing to learn or do anything. I had to have a job. Still no luck. The last place we went to, just a few miles out of town, was an old Root Beer Barrel drive-in that had been converted to a truck stop. It was called the Big Wheel. An old lady named Granny owned the place and she peeked out of the window from time to time at all those kids. She needed someone on the graveyard shift; 11 at night until seven in the morning. She paid 65 cents an hour, and I could start that night. I raced home and called the teenager down the street that baby-sat for people. I bargained with her to come and sleep on my sofa for a dollar a night. She could arrive with her pyjamas on and the kids would already be asleep. This seemed like a good arrangement to her, so we made a deal. That night when the little ones and I knelt to say our prayers, we all thanked God for finding Mommy a job. And so I started at the Big Wheel. When I got home in the mornings I woke the baby-sitter up and sent her home with one dollar of my tip money -- fully half of what I averaged every night. As the weeks went by, heating bills added a strain to my meagre wage. The tires on the old Chevy had the consistency of penny balloons and began to leak. I had to fill them with air on the way to work and again every morning before I could go home. One bleak fall morning, I dragged myself to the car to go home and found four tires in the back seat. New tires. There was no note, no nothing, just those beautiful brand new tires. Had angels taken up residence in Indiana? I wondered. I made a deal with the owner of the local service station. In exchange for his mounting the new tires, I would clean up his office. I remember it took me a lot longer to scrub his floor than it did for him to do the tires. I was now working six nights instead of five, and it still wasn't enough. Christmas was coming, and I knew there would be no money for toys for the kids. I found a can of red paint and started repairing and painting some old toys. Then I hid them in the basement so there would be something for Santa to deliver on Christmas morning. Clothes were a worry too. I was sewing patches on top of patches on the boys pants, and soon they would be too far gone to repair. On Christmas Eve the usual customers were drinking coffee in the Big Wheel. These were the truckers, Les, Frank, and Jim, and a state trooper named Joe. A few musicians were hanging around after a gig at the Legion and were dropping nickels in the pinball machine. The regulars all just sat around and talked through the wee hours of the morning and then left to get home before the sun came up. When it was time for me to go home at seven o'clock on Christmas morning I hurried to the car. I was hoping the kids wouldn't wake up before I managed to get home and get the presents from the basement and place them under the tree. (We had cut down a small cedar tree by the side of the road down by the dump.) It was still dark and I couldn't see much, but there appeared to be some dark shadows in the car -- or was that just a trick of the night? Something certainly looked different, but it was hard to tell what. When I reached the car I peered warily into one of the side windows. Then my jaw dropped in amazement. My old battered Chevy was filled full to the top with boxes of all shapes and sizes. I quickly opened the driver's side door, scrambled inside and kneeled in the front facing the back seat. Reaching back, I pulled off the lid of the top box. Inside was whole case of little blue jeans, sizes 2-10! I looked inside another box: It was full of shirts to go with the jeans. Then I peeked inside some of the other boxes: There was candy, nuts, bananas, and bags of groceries. There was an enormous ham for baking, and canned vegetables and potatoes. There was pudding and Jell-O and cookies, pie filling and flour. There was a whole bag of laundry supplies and cleaning items, and there were five toy trucks and one beautiful little doll. As I drove back through empty streets as the sun slowly rose on the most amazing Christmas Day of my life, I was sobbing with gratitude. And I will never forget the joy on the faces of my little ones that precious morning. Yes, there were angels in Indiana that long-ago December . . . . and they all hung out at the Big Wheel truck stop. What can be the possible remedies under section 8 of the Human Rights Act 1998 for john?
EBA (buddhist association) invited famous Tibetan Lama Sogyal (senior buddhist figure) to a special Buddhist Service to be held at Ace Mill in Entwhistle, on Friday 28 October 2011.
Ace Mill is situated opposite the factory of Electro plc. In front of the mill there is a large open half-circular roadway. The Lama Sogyal believes that all public Buddhist services should be held in the open air. There have been (uncorroborated) allegations on various blogs and Facebook sites in the internet that Electro plc makes components for stun guns and supply supply them to the Chinese Government. Also, that Chinese troops have already used stun guns in Tibet on Buddhist monks in support of the Dalai Lama.
EBA chose this date deliberately, having found out that a high-powered Chinese Government Visiting Delegation was scheduled to visit Electro plc?s premises on that day.
EBA published in its website the programme for the event. The service was planned for 11.00 am and the congregation were then invited to accompany the Lama Sogyal across the road to Electro plc?s main entrance gates.
EBA planned the service to include a public sermon and address from trustee of EBA, and a public reply by the Lama Sogyal. Trustees?s address would have included a denunciation of the Chinese Government in respect of its oppression in Tibet. The Lama Sogyal would have echoed that denunciation, and added criticism of his own of the Chinese Government in relation to oppression of Tibetan Buddhists. This was advertised on EBA's website.
However, on 18 October 2011, the Chief Constable of Greater Entwhistle Police (?GEP?), having been alerted by the Chinese Embassy in the UK to the EBA website contents, issued a notice to EBA trustees under s14 Public Order Act 1986, imposing the following conditions on the EBA service planned for 28 October 2011:
1. any service and event to be held by the EBA between 19 October and 31 October 2011 should be held in an alternative location in Greater Entwhistle, at least 10 miles from Electro plc?s main gates.
2. the maximum number of demonstrators shall be 20.
3. the maximum duration of the service and demonstration shall be 2 hours.
4. the service and event should be held within a building, and not in the open-air.
In a separate letter, the Chief Constable asked EBA to advise its members that if any prospective demonstrator seeks to trespass on any part of Electro plc?s premises on 28 October 2011, GEP would arrest them under powers not limited to, but including, powers contained in s128 Serious Organised Crime and Police Act 2005.
In light of the above, EBA reluctantly cancelled the service, whilst protesting in writing to the Chief Constable.John and Mary Eva, residents of Cornwall, who had booked non-refundable flights from Exeter Airport to Manchester Airport (and road transfers), and partly non-refundable hotel accommodation at a five-star hotel, in order to participate in the advertised service. They lost the opportunity to hear a sermon from the Lama Sogyal, plus over £1,800.

Can John and Mary Eva use the Human Rights Act 1998 to challenge the decision of the Chief Constable and claim for their £1,800 losses?

WITH QUALIFIED RIGHTS YOU SHOULD ALSO CONSIDER THE MARGIN OF APPRECIATION - Exercised and applied in the Country concerned, BUT supervised by the Commission and the Court to ensure that acceptable margins of appreciation are not exceeded. (a concept used by the ECHR as in Handyside v United Kingdom (1976)). (UK Courts have referred to the margin if discretion)
ALSO CONSIDER THE ISSUE OF PROPORTIONALITY

Is Islam the Most tolerant religion? Please share your views on these facts, please?
A few facts about Islam:
In Islam:
-Allah will not judge a person by their looks, race, gender, wealth, status etc, but only the goodness in their heart (piety)
-Islam is colour blind - it is for everyone to embrace. The prophet Muhammed PBUH said in his last sermon, that a black man is not superior to a white man and vice versa, and that a arab is not superior to a non-arab and vice versa.
-The first muezzin (caller to prayer) and the 1st person to enter Paradise will be Bilal (peace on him) who was a black/african man, who lived a life of poverty and sorrows and who had no status in society since he was so poor.
-In Islam, there is no such thing as original sin, sin Islam is fair and everyone is accountable for their Own sins. Also, those who embrace Islam, have all their past sins wiped away.
-Muslim men And women will get pure/virgin spouses in Heaven
-Murder and hurting even people's feelings is forbidden in Islam, regardless of whether they are non-muslim or muslim, Islam respects all people and expects its followers to do the same.
-Islam teaches kindness to animals, including dogs and pigs. Muslims cannot harm these creatures, in fact, if the opportunity comes, we should help these animals if they are ever in pain or if they are hungry. In the Quran, there is a chapter (surah Kaf) which is about a faithful loyal dog companion who helps the group of good muslim men.
-In Islam it is ILLEGAL to force people embrace Islam. It is also illegal to force a muslim to follow Islamic teachings e.g. wearing hijab, or fasting etc, since Islam is about a person accepting it sincerely in their hearts, not through force.
-Islam is tolerant to homosexuals, since it does not wish death upon them. Also, in Islam, homosexual thoughts aren't forbidden, it is only the acts of homosexuality that are seen as sins.
-Islam tells us to look after our neighbours, regardless of their religion and race. Islam also tells us to look after our parents till the day they die, and not kick them into old age homes.
-Islam honours women and gives her the right to do what she wants. She has a choice to wear hijab, she has a choice to divorce, she has the right to keep all her money to herself, she has the right work, she has the right to educate, her testimony is NOT half of a man's- if she is raped, her testimony alone is enough to convict a rapist (with capital punishment --> Islamic rule) etc.
-A man and woman are equal in Islam, the only thing that is different is their dress code since men and women have different physical appearances and different minds/mentality.
-In Islam, all muslims Must give charity, unless they are extremely poor themselves.
-In Islam, there is a pillar 'Hajj', where millions of people go to, to worship their one Creator. There are people there from all colours, statuses and ethnic backgrounds, but during Hajj they are all equal as they wear the same uniform (ihram) and must do the same acts of worship.
Allah will not favour a rich man over a poor man, rather Allah favours the person who has the most love and sincerity in their heart.
-In Islam, a martyr means a person who dies while doing something good e.g. dying while saving someone, dying for one's country, etc.
-Islam does Not disallow muslims from making non-muslim friends. This is a misconception. Islam just disallows making them a 'protector'. Islam does not wish to put burdens on non-muslims by making them protectors of people who they are not like.
And there are many MANY more points about Islam being a tolerant religion, but there is limited space :(
Please feel free to add!! :D
Take care
Peace & Love - Salam alaykum
<3
@ How can you judge a religion by its followers? It was GOD who made Islam, not the humans who call themselves muslims, also the Saudi arabians did Not create Islam either :). Those muslims who are committing such crimes e.g. killing people, are going Against Islam and are sinners. They will be punished by Allah for their evil sins.
Honour killing is Forbidden in Islam. Murder is not allowed. Only capital punishment of notorious criminals e.g. rapists is allowed.
Forced marriages are also forbidden in Islam.
Interesting read about women's rights in Islam. *I am So happy to be female + Muslim! woot!* http://books.google.co.uk/books?vid=ISBN1897940637&redir_esc=y
:D
@'Death to apostates': This is alos another misconception about Islam. Islam believes in Free will!
Therefore, if a muslim decides to leave Islam, they are not to be killed according to Islam. They can live their life as a non-muslim, and they will be judged by Allah on this. Humans are not the judge of someone's life's choices, so long as their choice does not harm/cause death to several people.
As I said above, only nototrious criminals e.g. mass murderers and rapists are put to death in Islam.
@Stoning: Stoning in Islam, for those who do adultery is ONLY allowed IF the adulterer gives PERMISSION to be stoned e.g. if they regret for their sin and want to be cleansed in this world (since the punishment in Hell is far greater). Islam is a religion which is tolerant and does Not force people. :)

@Boats: Prophet Muhammed PBUH did not murder Jews and Christians because they weren't coming to Islam. He was in a war with them, because as we know, there is always wars when people fight for their rights, or fight for their protection.
Muslims were many a times endangered, their safety and treaties were violated many times, and there was no choice but to go to war to fight for their right to live. Wouldn't you fight for your life, if someone attacked you?
Islam is NOT antisemitic - if it was indeed that, then why is Virgin Mary (a JEWess) honored in Islam? Why does Islam respect the 'people of the book' a.k.a the Jews and Christians? Why does Islam allow Muslim men to marry Jews and christians? Why did Prophet Muhammed show love to the Jewess who abused him 9and she soon accepted Islam after she saw his kindness/sincerity)?
Does Islam sound like a antisemitic religion to you? I'm a muslim and I am not that - because Islam teaches me to love All regardless of religion, colour, creed
