Hi Phil,
First up (and not borne out of this week's topic, ironically), thanks for the regular diet of newsletters. I do enjoy them.
Secondly, and I have no obvious philosophical tie-in, your comment on your seeming ungrateful nephew reminded me of my own son, when he was small.
Nothing pleased him - no gift, no event, nothing brought a smile to his face. He wasn't ungrateful per se (although you may argue), but nothing was ever enough - the event was too short, the toy lacking. I despaired about what the larger version of this little ingrate would be like.
We never chastised this - although we may have shown disappointment. My wife has enormous patience, so the result credits her rather than me. Neither is she a 'push-over' - she does not suffer fools.
My son is now 20. Everything pleases him - our house rings with his laughter, and he finds pleasure in everything around him. I guess all things, even though we offer our own encouragement, grow in their own time.
Stay well,
Paul

Subj: wise words...
dear phil booker
a good day to u
thank u for ur newsletter
i have been living in an insular society for 9 years now and one of the basic ingredients is revenge in all shades and it taught me a lot ... i have roamed mymindsites and also due to my 63+ planet age i am rather free of it i guess having learnt the cruel life lessons on spiritual guide lines ~ revenge is very much based here on religious training ~ and thus considered a valid weapon for social behaviour ~ tit for tat is normal here and now way to change in site...]
I am looking forward to ur next wisdom message and wish u all some sunshine wherever u are...
I sign with a smile

Subj: wisdom4u 4me + a little thank you
Thank you, you have brightened my day immensely. I am a song writer and I am constantly finding myself in a writers block with my lyrics, and after reading your answer to the question sent by a uni/college student, I have now realised that most of my lyrics contain those terrible nasty negative words, and I now see my ailment, so thank you again for your words,
Yours Ben

Hi,
I found your letter to be extremely interesting, being that I am a philosophical person myself. I took a course in Philosophy in College, and since then I've been craving to continue it. This is good because it's kind of like a "philosophy for beginners", not getting too deep into it (even though the more philosophy makes you think, the more you learn from it). I really enjoyed reading your letter and would like to receive more of them when they are sent out.
Please put me on your list, and I look forward to more of these "time outs" from my job to read these and put my mind at ease!
Thank you
J

Subj: Re: Practical Philosophy & Wisdom - OPINIONS
In all honesty I have enjoyed much of your wisdom.
I have been waiting for your thoughts on OPINIONS. It is interesting to note that you mention reputations. REPUTATION for me is made up of other peoples' opinions. Why should we worry about what other people think of us especially, when we have no control over what other people will say or think about us. What is more important is what we think of ourselves is the key. If we are to focus on having a good REPUTATION then we give all our power to others and we constantly are in the mode of trying to please everyone but ourselves.
Food for thought.
Liz
