Wisdom Of Crowds
Today's Story on LOVE: Love is an intense feeling of deep affection. Love can also mean an intense sexual attraction to someone. If we forget the personal feeling for a moment, how would we describe someone who shows love to the world? Perhaps a good example would be that you offer the same affection to everyone, whether a neighbour or an enemy. If you met a stranger, then you would offer the same help regardless. Of course this feeling of offering love to the world is one that many would think they readily apply each day. Like many moments of sadness a spiralling effect is created. If you are hurting, or you are suffering regular bouts of pain, your temperament is more unstable than normal; and your ability to offer love diminishes. Alternatively if you experience a few moments of selfishness, your greed to serve than mood increases and the chance of you offering any love also diminishes. Not me! Cries the reader... Unless you are very saintly, selfishness is difficult to shrug off. In some small way, each day, there is evidence of a selfish action. Forgive me for suggesting it can be eliminated, but selfishness can be weakened. To see it and understand it is half the battle. Have you ever been in a similar situation to this merchant in the next story? A HASIDIC STORY A wealthy Jewish merchant treats a poor old man with rudeness and disdain as they travel together on a train. When they arrive at their common destination, the merchant finds the station thronged with pious Jews waiting in ecstatic joy to greet the arrival of one of the holiest rabbis in Europe, and learns to his frustration that the old man in his compartment is that saintly rabbi. Embarrassed at his disgraceful behaviour and distraught that he missed a golden opportunity to speak in privacy to a wise and holy man, the merchant pushes his way through the crowd to find the old man. When he reaches him, he begs the rabbi's forgiveness and requests his blessing. The old rabbi looks at him and replies, "I cannot forgive you. To receive forgiveness you must go out and beg it from every poor old person in the world." (by: Brian Cavanaugh, T.O.R., The Sower's Seeds). QUOTE: 'Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; begin it well and serenely and with too high a spirit to be cumbered with your old nonsense.' (Ralph Waldo Emerson).

Did anyone buy Derren Brown's bulls***t last night?
The Wisdom of Crowds. I mean was he serious?
And to his group of 24 volunteers, can you please tell us losers the numbers for tonight's draw.
Oh and while you are it next week's numbers would be nice too.
And how about Euromillions? Can't be that hard.
I am thinking about getting people together and doing that "automatic writing" thing. Anyone interested?
@ Derren Brown - used to be a big fan. I was obviously expecting some kind of an "illusionist" explanation but I think this time you have completely lost the plot.
@ some of the answers
Look guys, it doesnt matter what techniques he used etc. (like split screens, lazers, etc)
What did matter was how he explained what he pulled off. ie I was looking for a clever explanation not the stupidest thing ever. Something like "I have a secret weapon" or "employed some mathematicians" or even "hypnotized security guards and looped cctv at lottery headquaters" would be more believable.
But a bunch of "psychic lottery winners" who can only improve with further practice, thats just bad. BAD TV imo.

Is Derren Brown a magician or a self publicist?
This week, he had two shows on Channel 4. One showing him predicting the lottery numbers correctly, the other 'showing' how he did it'. If what he showed us is correct, then all we have to do is get together in groups to win the lottery-the wisdom of crowds. We knew this already, in that syndicates are often formed to try to win the lottery. So what was new? Nothing. No, the wisdom of crowds thing was just a bluff to conceal the real way he did it. And he got two programmes on Channel 4 to himself. Why do they let him get away with it? He's not a real magician in the mould of say Paul Daniels.

What do you think of the idea of an Open Source College / University ?
I was thinking after I qualify in computing maybe doing a course in Open Source technology. Shit why not stop there and found my own college? I was thinking to have it on the Isle of Man and call it OSU eventually. Any-one who does computing will know that Open Source is the most public- involving project available and there are thousands of student who believe in the idea. I believe this is truly amazing and encompases all the ideas of wikinomics and the wisdom of crowds. Please, please just add a little more to this discussion to harness the idea.............thanx.
its not iow its iom (isle of man)
to answer your question the iom is mostly about off shore finance, broadband is over 95% and 75,000 people live there/here.
